Pisces: the constellation that holds the vernal equinox

The Science

Every year on the March equinox — the moment when day and night are equal and the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north — the Sun stands in Pisces. This point, still called the "First Point of Aries" from when Hipparchus defined it in 130 BCE, has been drifting westward through the sky at one degree every 72 years due to Earth's axial wobble. It entered Pisces around 68 BCE and will remain here until roughly 2597, when it moves into Aquarius. Pisces thus contains the zero-point of the celestial coordinate system — the cosmic reference mark from which all astronomical positions are measured. — Wikipedia, March equinox · First Point of Aries

The Mysticism

In Greek myth, Pisces is Aphrodite and Eros transforming themselves into fish and leaping into the Euphrates to escape the monster Typhon — two beings who dissolved their form to survive. In Babylonian tradition, the two fish represent the cord that binds heaven and earth. In astrology, Pisces is the last sign, the one that contains everything that came before — every lesson from every other sign, held together by a cord that should not, by all logic, hold. The sign that ends cycles, begins the next world, and lives in both simultaneously.

Brightest Star — Alpherg / Kullat Nunu (η Piscium)
A G7 IIIa yellow giant binary star approximately 350 light-years away, magnitude 3.62. Its Babylonian name Kullat Nunu means "cord of the fish" — the rope that ties the two fish together in the constellation's traditional depiction. The name Alpherg (approved by the IAU in 2018) derives from Arabic "al-fargh," meaning "the outpouring." Alpherg has about 3.78 solar masses, 26.5 solar radii, and is ~457 times more luminous than the Sun. — Wikipedia / Eta Piscium
02
Van Maanen's Star — The Nearest Solitary White Dwarf
At just 14.1 light-years away, Van Maanen's Star (Van Maanen 2) is the nearest known single white dwarf to the Sun — the closest white dwarf that doesn't have a bright companion star. Discovered in 1917 by Dutch-American astronomer Adriaan van Maanen, it is classified DZ8: a white dwarf with detectable metal absorption lines in its spectrum, suggesting it has accreted material from asteroids or planetary debris. Its apparent magnitude is 12.37 — far too faint to see without a telescope. — Wikipedia / Pisces constellation · Constellation-guide.com
03
The Vernal Equinox Lives in Pisces
The March equinox — when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading northward — currently occurs inside the boundaries of Pisces. This point, the zero-mark of the celestial coordinate system, entered Pisces around 68 BCE due to Earth's axial precession (one degree every ~72 years). It will remain in Pisces until approximately 2597, when it moves into Aquarius. All star positions in astronomy are ultimately measured relative to this point — which sits in the heart of the constellation of the Fishes. — Wikipedia / March equinox · First Point of Aries
04
Messier 74 — The Phantom Galaxy
The only Messier object in Pisces, M74 is a grand-design spiral galaxy approximately 30 million light-years away, seen face-on from Earth. It has two clearly defined spiral arms and is estimated to contain about 100 billion stars. Despite its size, M74 has one of the lowest surface brightnesses of any Messier object, making it one of the most challenging for amateur astronomers. It lies 1.5 degrees east-northeast of Alpherg. — Wikipedia / Pisces constellation

The Real Stars of Pisces

What modern astronomy found inside the Fishes — the coordinate zero-point of the entire sky, and a dead star next door that ate its own planets.

The First Point of Aries: the zero of the sky — currently in Pisces

Astronomers measure all celestial positions using a coordinate system anchored to a specific point on the sky: where the Sun crosses the celestial equator moving northward in March. This point is called the First Point of Aries — named by Hipparchus in 130 BCE, when it lay in Aries. Earth's axial precession, a slow 26,000-year wobble of our planet's rotation axis, has since moved this zero-point westward through the zodiac. It entered Pisces around 68 BCE and has been here ever since.

Every star's right ascension — the celestial equivalent of longitude — is measured eastward from this point. Every telescope, satellite, and space telescope uses coordinates relative to it. The most precisely measured location in the sky is currently inside the boundaries of Pisces, a faint and often overlooked constellation. This is the irony of precession: the sign that astrology associates with dissolution and boundary-loss contains the single most anchored reference point in all of astronomical measurement. — Wikipedia / March equinox · First Point of Aries

"All star positions in astronomy — every telescope coordinate, every satellite trajectory, every catalogue entry — are ultimately measured from a point that currently sits in the constellation Pisces. The zero of the sky belongs to the last sign of the zodiac." — based on Wikipedia / March equinox

Van Maanen's Star, 14.1 light-years from Earth, is the nearest white dwarf we can observe in isolation — without a bright companion star. Its DZ8 spectral classification reveals heavy elements in its atmosphere that should have sunk out of sight long ago in this high-gravity object. The accepted explanation: the star is slowly consuming rocky debris — fragments of asteroids or planets that once orbited it, now accreted onto its surface. Van Maanen's Star is eating what remains of its planetary system. — Wikipedia / Pisces · Constellation-guide.com

Pisces 2026 Horoscope

Neptune — your ruler — leaves Pisces after 15 years in January. A new era begins. The dreams are still there; now it's time to make them real.

The Year the Dream Becomes a Plan

Annual Forecast · 2026 · Celestiera Astrology · Sources: Cafe Astrology, CHANI

January 26 marks a once-in-a-generation shift: Neptune leaves Pisces after 15 years. Since 2011, Neptune has been moving through the sign it rules — amplifying Pisces's natural gifts of imagination, empathy, and spiritual sensitivity, but also blurring boundaries and making practical anchoring difficult. AstroTwins describe this as a "turning point that will only come once in your lifetime." The question shifts from "Who am I?" to "How do I bring what I am into the world?" Cafe Astrology frames the release: Pisces feels "far less pressure on your personality and personal image" as Neptune departs. Saturn also leaves Pisces in February, ending years of structural pressure on self-definition.

The first half of 2026 is ruled by Jupiter in Cancer, activating Pisces's solar fifth house: creativity, romance, playfulness, and joy. Cafe Astrology describes this as a powerful time for creative expression — Pisces is invited to explore desires, enjoy itself, and let its imagination lead. CHANI underlines: "Pisces, 2026 is conspiring to make those famous dreams of yours a reality." The Virgo-Pisces eclipse axis continues through August, with the final Pisces eclipse on August 27 (Lunar Eclipse at 4°53' Pisces). This last eclipse closes a multi-year chapter of identity transformation and signals: the chrysalis is done.

When Jupiter enters Leo on June 30, it moves into Pisces's solar sixth house — work, health, daily routines, and service. CHANI: this is when "incredible support to expand your work or share your talents with a wider audience" arrives. "More attention and praise are en route." Cafe Astrology notes a powerful period for work and wellness — but cautions Pisces to find balance between creative indulgence in the first half and the practical focus of the second. Uranus entering Gemini in April activates the fourth house, beginning a seven-year renovation of home and emotional foundations.

The Pisces Personality

Jupiter and Neptune jointly ruled, mutable water — the universe's prototype for the person who feels everything that is happening in every room they have ever been in, all at once, always.

🌊

Boundless Empathy

Pisces does not observe emotions from a distance — it absorbs them. The ability to feel what others are feeling, often before those others have named it themselves, is not a skill Pisces developed but a condition it was born into. This makes Pisces a healer, a confessor, a presence that people seek out when they need to feel genuinely understood.

🎨

The Imagination

Neptune gives Pisces access to the interior life at unusual depth. The dream world, the symbolic, the mythic — these are not escapes for Pisces but primary modes of perception. The creative output of Pisces, when allowed to fully surface, tends to be genuinely strange and genuinely moving. It sees things that are real, just not yet visible to everyone else.

🕊️

Spiritual Orientation

Pisces is the last sign — the one that has absorbed all the lessons of the other eleven and arrived at something resembling wisdom, or at least wonder. Its natural orientation is toward the transcendent: the question of what is beneath the surface of things, what connects everything to everything else, what the point is. This is not escapism. It is genuine philosophical hunger.

🌫️

The Dissolving Self

Boundaries are not Pisces's strong suit. The same permeability that makes it an extraordinary empath makes it vulnerable to taking on other people's emotional weight, losing itself in relationships, or disappearing into whatever environment it inhabits. The challenge is not becoming less sensitive but learning to choose consciously when and where to be porous.

🌀

The Evasion

Pisces can be extraordinarily difficult to pin down — not through deception but through a genuine slipperiness, a tendency to drift away from confrontation, to give vague answers, to be somewhere else when directness is required. This is not dishonesty; it is conflict-avoidance taken to its logical conclusion. The truth becomes something Pisces feels but cannot always say.

💭

Reality as Optional

The same imagination that is Pisces's greatest gift is also its greatest risk. The capacity to live inside a version of reality that is more beautiful, or less painful, than the actual one can become a sustained retreat. The practical, the bureaucratic, the urgent — these domains require Pisces to swim against its natural current, and it does not always manage the distance.

Pisces Among the Water Signs

Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces all carry water's emotional depth — but each holds it differently. Cancer is the tide: cyclic, close to home, pulled back always to what is familiar. Scorpio is the deep current beneath the surface: powerful, invisible, always moving, always purposeful. Pisces is the ocean without shores: diffuse, boundary-less, connecting everything to everything. Where Cancer needs a home to return to and Scorpio needs a depth to dive toward, Pisces needs only the current itself — it is already everywhere. The last sign of the zodiac is also the most total: its compassion encompasses all twelve archetypes, which is why it can seem both the most giving and the most formless. If you love a Pisces, you are loving something that genuinely cannot be possessed. It will give you everything — its imagination, its empathy, its inexhaustible gentleness — if you let it remain, at some level, free.
